This is a landscape painting of a view to a bird sanctuary that is located on a small rocky island off the coast of Vancouver Island. I left the name of the particular place blank so that it could be any place of sanctuary in the viewer's mind. Like most of the landscapes, it is a mixture of memory and imagination. When I began the series of gray coloured landscapes, I had just finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and had found the starkness of his landscape seductive. It reminded me of the West Coast landscape in its many months of gray. However, I find a great deal of beauty in the many subtle changes in light and colour within the grays of this coastal land.
