Rebecca's Teaching Bio

I have been teaching art classes for sixteen years, beginning at the Mt. Pleasant Community Centre while I was pursuing a joint undergraduate degree in Studio Art and English Literature at the University of British Columbia.  I graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in drawing and painting from the University of British Columbia in 2006.  Since then I have taught drawing and painting in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program at UBC, and Intermediate and Advanced Painting at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.  I currently teach Painting Fundamentals, Introduction to Acrylic Painting, and Intermediate Acrylic Painting in the Continuing Studies Department of Emily Carr University of Art and Design.

In addition to teaching at the post-secondary level, I have also taught various ages at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, from mixed-media preschool and primary classes, skill development for teens, to drawing and painting classes for adults.

My home studio classes blend my experience teaching at the post-secondary level, career-oriented art education, with my experience teaching art for personal development and enjoyment.  My teaching philosophy blends skill development with a process-oriented approach.  At all levels, students are encouraged to push their technique while enjoying the process, accepting and celebrating unexpected results.
